Gemstones on the loose, sounds like an action movie, doesn’t it? I thought I would explore a question that I have been asked more than once……should I buy a loose gemstone or one that is already pre-set?
We have all been there, beautiful jewelry showroom, salesperson pushing trays of sparkling pre-set gems in front of you, being overwhelmed by the beautiful colors and sparkle. Well, if truth be told, most people usually buy pre-set gemstones. It is the easiest and fastest way to purchase jewelry. However, it is not always the most cost-efficient and rewarding.
There are several advantages to purchasing loose gemstones. Let’s explore some of them:
-it is usually more cost-efficient. Unset gemstones are almost always less expensive than their pre-set counterparts. And I mean cheaper INCLUDING the price you pay to have the stone set.
-it is well known that Gemological Institutes always grade loose gemstones. It is the only way to find the true value of gemstones. All angles of the gem can be evaluated and graded. If there is any flaw, it cannot hide from the meticulous eye of the gemologist. However, if the stone is pre-set, several angles of the stone are not as easily seen, meaning inclusions and other flaws can hide. Depending on what metal the stone is pre-set into, the color of the gemstone can even be changed. Set stones tend to have a darker appearance in color.
-having the chance to design your own masterpiece. Once you find the gemstone of your dreams, you can than decide upon the metal setting. The world of metals give the designer an endless palette to choose from; gold, white gold, silver, titanium, platinum, rose gold, etc. The choice is exclusively yours. If you want to add some accent gemstones to your design, the choice is yours and only yours. And the best part, no one will have a jewelry piece like yours, NO ONE! You will not be settling for the mass-produced jewelry products that most of the chain jewelry stores are selling.
-a reputable gemstone dealer that has been in the business for a long period of time can present you with an incredible array of quality gemstones. But remember, in the jewelry industry, reputation is everything. Ask around for opinions about the dealer. Check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure there have been no complaints or disputes. This is an expensive transaction, research is a must!
Creating your own special work-of-art is not as easy as picking something already pre-made from a jewelry store showcase. But the extra effort results in a one-of-a-kind quality piece that can be handed down as a family heirloom for years and years to come.
